Bitcoin’s Sleeping Giants Awaken as October Activity Accelerates
As of Tuesday, data compiled by btcparser.com, which monitors the reawakening of long-dormant bitcoin wallets across the Bitcoin blockchain, reveals that 23 old-school wallets have emerged from hibernation so far in Oct. 2026.
That activity translates into 971.445 previously dormant bitcoins changing hands since Bitcoin.com News published its Sunday report on sleeping bitcoins. The substantial increase in spending activity originated from two distinct wallets within the batch. The first transferred 411.45 BTC from a wallet established on Sept. 11, 2013.
Arkham Intelligence identifies the entity behind the address as an unidentified “BTC whale.” The transaction moved funds from a legacy address to a newer Segwit-format wallet, consolidating two unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) in the process.
Irish Authorities Move $41M From Drug Dealer’s Lost Bitcoin Fortune
Then came Tuesday’s 500 BTC movement from the legacy wallet established in 2016. Unlike the 2013 transaction, this transfer was linked to convicted Irish drug dealer Clifton Collins, whose confiscated bitcoin holdings have been gradually recovered by Irish authorities. Arkham Intelligence identified the $41.5 million transfer as the fifth such movement this year, with the funds arriving at Coinbase.

Collins originally accumulated 6,000 BTC between 2011 and 2012 using proceeds from cannabis trafficking, later losing access to the private keys reportedly hidden inside a fishing rod case discarded at a landfill. Irish authorities, working with Europol, began recovering the inaccessible fortune earlier this year, with Tuesday’s transaction bringing the total moved to 2,500 BTC. Arkham believes law enforcement is responsible for the latest transfer, although officials have not independently confirmed this particular movement.
The remaining 3,500 BTC, valued at approximately $288 million, represents another extraordinary chapter in one of Bitcoin’s strangest lost-fortune sagas.
