Bitcoin-Related Google Searches Hit a 5-Year Low as Traders Eye a Bottom

Key Takeaways

Retail Has Left the Building

Google Trends does not measure raw search volume but rather scores interest on a relative scale from 0 to 100, so a five-year low means public curiosity about bitcoin is weaker now than at any point since 2021, including the depths of the 2022 bear market.

Popular online trader Crypto Kaleo was quick to flip the meaning behind the signal, stating:

“The last time google searches for Bitcoin were this low were Sept 2023 & Sept 2024. Both were local lows.

The Data Backs up the Apathy

Google is not the only place showing a retail retreat, given that Robinhood’s crypto transaction revenue plunged 55% to $120 million in the third quarter, while crypto trading volume on the platform fell 38% to $50 billion (all while the company posted a record overall revenue).

Onchain data tells a similar story, and Santiment found that non-empty bitcoin wallets fell by roughly 30,000 since Oct. 16 to about 59.95 million, which it interpreted as retail capitulation.

Lastly, sentiment gauges have cooled as well, with the Crypto Fear and Greed Index sitting at 51, or neutral, on Oct. 28, up from 48 the day before. Google Trends data is one of the index’s six inputs, carrying a 10% weighting.

Why Boredom Can Be Bullish

Contrarians argue that disinterest is exactly what a bottom looks like because when the casual crowd stops searching, the sellers who panic on every dip have often already sold.

Galaxy’s Alex Thorn made a version of that case this week, arguing that the bottom is in because “the crowd has left” and that bitcoin is in the accumulation phase that preceded every prior advance. Galaxy also noted that spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) added 87,000 BTC after the June low.

Bigger players appear to be buying while retail looks away and wallets holding 10 to 10,000 BTC added more than 85,000 BTC since Oct. 9. Fresh ETF money has also trickled in, with Blackrock driving the entire $110 million inflow during a recent session.

Search data now joins a long list of quirky crowd indicators traders lean on, alongside the fast-food favorite behind bitcoin’s weirdest bullish signal.

Not Everyone Is Convinced

Bitcoin is down 7.3% this year and, alongside gold, ranks last among major assets. Jason Calacanis has predicted BTC will never reclaim its price peak, and Chamath Palihapitiya has gone further, warning that bitcoin will hit zero once quantum computer systems are capable enough.

Cryptoquant CEO Ki Young Ju also warned that BTC must hold $80K to avoid a long liquidation cascade toward $73,000, while the Federal Reserve’s rate decision later today has added yet another layer of risk to the mix. Interesting week ahead, to say the least.
