BTC USD Bounces Off $76,500 After the $6.36 Billion Binance Hack While Retail Traders Pile Into Longs: Is the Bottom In, or Is This the Bybit Pattern Again?

Bitcoin (BTC USD) fell to $76,500 early on Friday, October 30, hours after hackers drained about $6.36 billion from Binance in the largest crypto theft on record, and traders are now split on whether that was the low.
The bounce has been thin. Bitcoin trades at $77,800, down 3% in 24 hours and 4.8% in a week, and the Crypto Fear & Greed Index has dropped from 51 to 30 in a day. The low landed almost exactly on the 200-day moving average, a line Bitcoin has closed above every day since its August breakout.

So who is buying this dip, what do past exchange hacks say about the bottom, and which levels decide it?

What Are Traders Doing After the Binance Hack?

Retail traders are buying the dip with leverage, while larger players hedge and U.S. buyers stay away. OKX, Deribit and Coinbase each show a piece of it.

  • More accounts went long. On OKX, the ratio of accounts long to short on Bitcoin jumped from 1.80 at 19:00 UTC on Thursday, an hour before the hack, to 2.72 by 03:00 on Friday. It has eased to 2.25.
  • Open interest rose into the drop. OKX’s Bitcoin futures open interest, the value of open contracts, climbed 9% from $3.42 billion to $3.73 billion while the price fell. New positions were opening, not closing.
  • Funding never flipped. The rate longs pay shorts on OKX stayed positive through the crash, at 0.01% at midnight and 0.0055% at 08:00 UTC. A true flush usually drives it negative.
  • Options traders bought protection. On Deribit, 30,846 BTC of puts traded in 24 hours against 18,912 BTC of calls, 1.63 puts for every call. Its implied-volatility index jumped from 36.2 to 39.6 and is already back at 37.5.
  • U.S. buyers held back. Bitcoin on Coinbase traded up to $218 below Binance overnight, double its gap before the hack, a sign American demand didn’t step in.

ETF money gives no answer yet. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds took in $17.2 million on Thursday, but trading closed before the first Binance wallet was drained at 20:05 UTC. Friday’s flows are the first real read.

That mix is the problem for anyone calling a bottom. The liquidations hit about $1.55 billion, but leverage is back above where it started, and dip-buying longs are the fuel for the next flush if $76,500 breaks.

Is the Bottom In for BTC USD?

History says probably not yet. In four of the last six major exchange hacks, Bitcoin set a deeper low 11 to 24 days later, between 14.6% and 46.3% below its close the day before the hack.

The closest match is Bybit, the previous record at $1.5 billion and the work of the same North Korean group TRM Labs blames this time. Bitcoin closed at $98,305 the day before that hack on February 21, 2025. It bottomed at $76,606 on March 11, 18 days and 22.1% later.

The exception was Binance’s own hack in May 2019, when 7,000 BTC was stolen. The low came on the day of the hack, and Bitcoin was up 35% a week later. KuCoin in 2020 barely dented the price.

None of these drops had one cause. The 2025 slide came with Trump’s tariff threats, and the August 2024 low with a global market sell-off. The hack is rarely the whole story, but it tends to land on a market that is already fragile, and this one is.

There is also a direct supply risk. TRM Labs says the attacker still holds the 18,270 BTC taken from Binance, about $1.42 billion at today’s price, and is already splitting it into 1,000 BTC and 100 BTC pieces. It expects the coins to move through bridges, swap services and OTC brokers next, which leaves a large seller hanging over the market.

BTC USD Price Analysis: Can Bitcoin Hold the 200-Day EMA?

It held on the first test. Friday’s low of $76,500 on Binance came $30 above the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) at $76,470, and buyers stepped in right there. BTC USD now sits between that line and the 50-day EMA at $80,600, which it lost on Thursday.

The three-month chart shows why $76,500 matters. Bitcoin spent late August and early September in a range between $74,968 and $82,300 before breaking out to $87,396 on September 21. The hack has pushed it back to the bottom half of that range.

  • Resistance: $80,600, the 50-day EMA, then $81,971, Thursday’s high before the hack. Above that, $84,898, the October 21 high.
  • Support: $76,500, Friday’s low at the 200-day EMA, then $74,968, the September 15 low and the floor of the late-summer range.

A bottom needs the longs to leave first, and so far they have been adding. For BTC USD, the signs to watch are Binance withdrawals reopening by Sunday, Friday’s ETF flows and the OKX long-short ratio falling back toward 1.8. Without them, a daily close above $80,600 is the minimum before calling the low.
